• "Women's Contributions to Leadership in Statistical Education" will be the topic of an Invited Paper Meeting sponsored jointly by this committee and the International Association for Statistical Education (IASE). The meeting, organized by Martha Aliaga (aliaga@umich.edu) of the University of Michigan, will include the following papers:
  1. "The Role of the Internet in Statistical Education" by Tae Rim Lee (Korea);
  2. "Leadership Research in Teaching and Learning Statistics" by Pilar Iglesias and Gloria Icaza (Chile);
  3. "Women's Role in Shaping Future Directions in Statistical Education" by Shyamala Nagaraj (Malaysia);
  4. "Statistical Education at the National University of Rosario, an Appraisal from the Gender Point of View" by Elsa Servy (Argentina).
  Mary Gray (USA) and Mary Regier (Lebanon/USA) will be discussants.
  
  "Measuring the Status of Women and Minorities in Society", will be the topic of an Invited Paper Meeting sponsored by this committee and organized by committee member Nanjamma Chinnappa (nach@blr.vsnl.net.in). The following papers will be presented:
  1. Micro-Simulation Studies Measuring the Status of Women and Minorities in Organizations, by Garnett Picot (Canada) and Ted Wannell (Canada);
  2. Women's Contributions to the Workforce: Are New Measures Needed? by Martha S. Farrar (USA) and Fred A. Vogel (USA);
  3. Measuring the Status of Women in Society - The Case of Developing Countries, by Malati Pochun (Mauritius).
  Lynne Billard (USA) and Heidi Arboleda (Thailand) will be discussants.
  
  
• It is also planned to organize a Contributed Paper Meeting in connection with the committee's on-going Characterizations project (see A CURRENT PROJECT, in which a number of country teams would present results of their surveys under the project.
  
  
• During the 53rd Session, the committee also expects to hold an open meeting, its fourth since it was established in 1995.

The five items on the committee's terms of reference remain at the basis of the committee's agenda. Specifically,

• The CWS has recommended a number of women members for appointment to available positions on ISI committees.
  
  
• Letters have been sent to all statistical societies whose addresses were available to us, drawing their attention to the work of the committee, and recommending that more women be given the opportunity and encouraged to fully participate in the activities of their own groups and those of the ISI family.
  
  
• A largely e-mail list of addresses is maintained for correspondents who have responded to our reports and mailouts. Announcements in the ISI newsletter and in newsletters of other statistical associations, which reach those without access to the internet as well, urge readers to contact us and send us their news by any means of communication that is available to them.
  
  
• In response to a CWS initiative, the ISI is restricting its 2001 Jan Tinbergen awards to women competitors. These awards are given to young nationals of developing countries (excluding nationals from transition countries) who submit original unpublished papers in Statistics which are judged best by an ISI jury. Full details can be obtained by contacting the ISI Permanent Office.
  
  
• The CWS continues to look for means by which it can assist women in developing countries in attending short courses relevant to their work or participating in international statistical meetings.

1. Initiating or recommending the nomination of a qualified female colleague to ISI membership. Committee members can help, if needed, in guiding the nominating process and contacting sponsors (a total of 5) for each application.
   
   
2. Encouraging a woman colleague to join any of the five ISI Sections (Mathematical Statistics & Probability, Statistical Computing, Statistical Education, Official Statistics, and Survey Statistics) that relate to her field of work .
   
   
3. Sending us information about recent publications, meetings. planned activities, or any news within the broad framework of the committee's areas of interest. Please e-mail such information to Nanjamma Chinnappa (nach@blr.vsnl.net.in). Many correspondents have found such items appearing under our BRIEF REPORTS both interesting and useful.
   
   
4. Helping us establish and strengthen contacts with groups devoted to similar issues.
   
   
5. Suggesting specific activities or projects and naming possible sources of funding.
   
   
6. Giving us your comments and suggestions, as well as your news.
