Statistics in Psychiatry

The use of statistics in the field of psychiatry is a fairly recent phenomenon with most of it occurring within the past 20 years or so.

This can be contrasted with psychology where statistics has been applied since the early 20th century. Since psychiatry is a medical discipline it employs some of the same statistical methodologies as traditional medicine, most notably Randomized Clinical Trials (RCT’s). A major difference between the two, however, involves the accuracy of diagnosis of disorders in psychiatry compared to other areas of medicine. Current research in psychiatry involves the implementation of novel statistical models in RCT’s and the role of genetics and neuroscience on psychiatric outcomes. In this talk I will discuss some of the issues in these areas as well as the direction of future research, including that with which I am involved.
