CASE Statistics Department Computing Policy

Draft 8/2/2002

General Policies

ü      All activities must conform to the CASE Information Technology Services Ethics policy.  This policy can be found at: http://help.case.edu/connect/policy/overview/view

ü      The account holder will be held responsible for any and all activities pertaining to his or her account.

ü      Do not share accounts or passwords with anyone.

ü      The departmental machines should not be used for: games, money making opportunities, non-department related file storage (movies, music, etc.), or related activities. If music or movie files that do not pertain to your work are found, they will be deleted without notice, and further disciplinary action may be taken.

ü      If there is a problem with any of the departmental machines, please report it immediately through to stats-help@case.edu

ü      Do not leave a computer unattended while you are logged on. If you must leave the room and cannot quit, please lock the screen.  Screens of lab computers that remain locked for more than 30 minutes will be forcibly unlocked and the user logged out.

ü      Accounts over their disk space quota should be dealt with immediately.  After you go above your quota, you have one week to fix the problem before your account is temporarily locked.  Quotas for students begin at 195 MB.

ü      Members of the department who leave the University may have their accounts and data removed from departmental machines at any time. It is your responsibility to ensure that your data is backed up after leaving the University. Special arrangements can be made with the system administrator. Class accounts, guest accounts or other temporary accounts may be removed when they expire.

ü      If disk space becomes a problem, you may be asked to delete files, even if you are below your quota.

Guidelines for Security and Passwords

ü      If you believe your accounts has been compromised, or notice any suspicious activity in the lab, please contact the staff immediately.

ü      If the problem seems to be serious, call CWRU security immediately at X-3333.

ü      Do not give your password to anyone

ü      Make sure that your password is easy to remember, but would be difficult for an attacker to guess.  Avoid things like: names, birthdays, words that can be found in a dictionary, etc.

ü      Use a combination of upper and lower case letters, numbers, and special characters for your password

ü      Change your password every six months.

ü      Do not re-set passwords from other computer systems.

ü      Back up important data to your own computer or a floppy disk, just in case.

ü      To copy data over the network, use a secure method such as SCP or SSH.
